The Two Pound coin is a Gold coin which was an occasional feature of British currency from 1823 until 1937. It has been struck in most years since 1986. These recent Two Pounds are aimed squarely at the collectors market. With the exception of proof coins issued in 1824, 1825, 1826, and 1831, the design of the reverse always featured the George and Dragon of Benedetto Pistrucci with the year in the exergue under the design.
The coin was normally issued cased struck as a proof, although the issues of 1823, 1887, 1893, and 1902 did circulate. The weight was 16 grams and had a diameter of 28 millimetres. It's first ever appearance was as a pattern in 1820.
