Phone: Pennies have been around since the late 8th century.
The British pre-decimal one Penny (1d) coin was a unit of currency equalling one two-hundred-and-fortieth of a pound sterling. Its symbol was d, from the Roman denarius.
The Penny was originally minted in Silver but from the late eighteenth-century onward it was minted in Copper and then after 1860 in Bronze. Before Decimalisation in 1971 there were two hundred and forty Pence in one Pound sterling. Twelve Pence made a Shilling and twenty Shillings made a Pound.
