The Royal Mint has been issuing Gold coin proof sets since 1980 and in 1983 the 3 coin set was introduced (without the Five Pounds). In 2010 a Quarter Sovereign was added thus introducing the 5 coin set. The key date is 1989 which commemorates 500 years since the Sovereign was introduced.
